Distribution of Oklahoma Amphibians and Reptiles by Recorded Sightings
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: Database
Description:
Abstract:
DOKARRS is a database of recorded sightings of amphibians and reptiles in Oklahoma. Records have been entered by students, researchers, enthusiasts and others. Dr. Charles Carpenter, herpetologist at the University of Oklahoma, began the database in the mid 1980s. The most recent entries are dated 1990. This database has been converted from its original mainframe database to a Unix-based MySQL database (version 3.22.25) so that it can more easily accessed via the World Wide Web.
Purpose:
DOKARRS is intended as a repository for all field records of both sighted and collected amphibians and reptiles in Oklahoma. The information in the database is intended for public use as well as for academic research purposes.
Supplemental_Information:
Genera and species scientific names were derived from either: 1) Webb, R.G. 1970. Reptiles of Oklahoma. A Stovall Museum Publication, U. Oklahoma Press, Norman, or 2) Conant, R. 1975. A Field Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern and Central United States. Houghton-Mifflin Co., Boston. Dr. Carpenter retained the family Iguanidae for the database.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
No attempts have been made to verify the accuracy of species identification, nor has any systematic quality control been applied to data entry.
Logical_Consistency_Report: None.
Completeness_Report:
The database was created to store sightings information contributed by many different people. There are also 1608 museum records from the University of Michigan, and 1042 museum records from the Carnegie Museum. Both museums contributed records of their Oklahoma amphibian and reptile collections. Many records contain incomplete fields and/or mis-spellings of county or place names. The minimum requirement for data entry was a scientific name and a locality, though the latter had no specific criteria. No quality control was ever applied to data entry, though Dr. Carpenter was responsible for deciding what records should be added to DOKARRS.
