Title: Natural Diversity Element Databases
Description:
Abstract:
This dataset comprises sites in Oklahoma where species with federal or state regulatory status have been reported. The Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory (ONHI) maintains spatial and non-spatial data on the distribution and location of elements of natural diversity in Oklahoma. Based on a variety of data sources including field work conducted by its own biologists, ONHI staff plot instances or occurrences of elements at 1:24,000 scale using Universal Transverse Mercator mapping coordinates. Because the quality of data sources vary, location accuracy or mapping precision is assigned to each site to indicate the degree of confidence that the instance is mapped at or near its true location.
Purpose:
The Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory was established in 1987 by the Oklahoma legislature to serve as a centralized repository on the state's natural heritage data. This dataset is one product from the Natural Diversity Element Database. ONHI is a program of the Oklahoma Biological Survey at the University of Oklahoma.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Primary attributes consist of species associated with sites and site identifiers. Identification of species occuring at a given site depends on the quality of the reporting source. Sources are graded on a scale of 1(highest quality) - 5 (lowest acceptable quality). ONHI has no means to verify the identification of species reported from outside sources. ONHI biologists periodically review the distribution of species in the database. Sites are uniquely identified in the database by a record number. In this dataset sites are uniquely identified by quadcode and site-id.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Displayed points represent the centroid location of a unique site on the ground. Site coordinates are checked to ensure they appear only once in the database. A given species or community occurrence may not appear more than once at a site, though sites may have multiple species or communities associated with them.
Completeness_Report:
All species reported in this dataset have or had federal or state endangerment status of some kind at the time the data were posted. While many other rare species exist in Oklahoma, we do not report them in this dataset. Generally, we map occurrence sites that we presume (from the available information) represent some aspect of vital habitat for a species population. Vital habitat would include areas such as that which would be required for breeding or for foraging associated with breeding. Temporary and irregularly used migration stops for birds, for instance, would not be reported in the dataset. All locations in this dataset were plotted at 1:24,000 scale by ONHI staff from information provided in the data source. The quality of this information varies greatly. In addition, location coordinate information in the table is omitted for sensitive species sites. This information may be provided by ONHI on receipt of a written request. The distribution range of a species in Oklahoma cannot be determined from these data alone. Nor can the significance of a site to a species population be inferred from the data presented here. Nothing in these data will tell you that one site is more important than another. All that we report here is the presence, often unverified, of one or more individuals of a species at a location reported seen or collected at a given date. Plotted locations may only indicate that someone encountered and reported a species occurrence at the given site. No record is entered into the dataset without data source information, but record sources are excluded from the dataset at this time. Source citations are available from ONHI on request.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Horizontal accuracy or 'Precision' is an index of confidence of the probability that the map coordinates represent the true location of a species occurrence. ONHI uses three qualitative levels of occurrence mapping accuracy: G, M and S. G = species occurrence probably occurs within an approximate area of 50 square miles of mapped location at 1:24,000 scale; M = species occurrence probably occurs within an approximate area of 7 square miles (about 1.5 mile radius) of mapped location at 1:24,000 scale; S = species occurrence probably occurs within 3 acres of the mapped location. This index is brought about by varying quality of location information provided by data sources. Vague or poorly described locations are of necessity mapped with less precision than are those locations having detailed description.

Lineage:
Methodology:
Methodology_Type: Data conversion
Methodology_Description:
The transformation of raw source data into ONHI database table records is not described in this document. This section summarizes the process of converting existing tabular data into map data for display. First, database table rows are imported from MS Access 97(c) to ArcView 3.2(c) and converted to an AV3 shape file using a custom extension created by GeoSystems. This extension facilitates importing Access table data and its initial conversion to a point shape file. The shape file is then converted to an Arc Info cover and reprojected from Universal Transverse Mercator coordinates to geographic (decimal degrees) projection. Once the projection is established, the new cover is reconverted to shape file format in AV3. The shape file attribute table is queried for the presence of 'sensitive data' flags associated with each record. The custom extension is used again to convert selected points to a new polygon shape file. Polygons in the new shape file are used to substitute the display of generalized locations for more precise point symbols. Finally, the mask polygon and point shape files are exported from AV3 as MS Access 97 tables, which are in turn ported to GeoSystems' SQL Server 7.0. SQL Data are then served to Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI) MapObjects via Common Gateway Interface (CGI).

Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
This dataset has two entities, site and instance. The site is the location where species are reported to occur and the instance is the occurrence of a single rare species at a given site. Sites in this dataset are all represented as points. Because rare species instances all occur at one site or another there is some overlap of entity attributes, nevertheless we distinguish site attributes from instance attributes.
