Small shrub to 60 cm (2 ft) tall, branching from the base. Branches smooth, striate-angled, becoming dark and fissured on older stems. Leaves alternate, sessile, larger ones 2-4 cm (0.8-1.6 in) long and 2-4 mm (0.08-0.16 in) wide, minutely undulate, becoming smaller toward ends of branches. Inflorescence corymbose, staminate and pistillate flowers on separate plants. Flower heads small, with reddish-brown plumose pappus conspicuous and persistent, blooming in Summer.
Distribution: Southern Great Plains to northern Mexico.
Habitat: Open mesa country.

Comment: Baccharis is derived from the Greek name for some other plant; texana refers to its discovery in Texas.
