Shrub to 1 m (3 ft) tall, with widely spreading branches and papery exfoliating bark. Leaves alternate, broadly ovate to deltoid, cordate to truncate, 1-4 cm (0.4-1.6 in) long and wide, margin dentate, crenate, shallowly lobed or almost entire, veins conspicuous on underside. Inflorescence paniculate or a series of small racemes. Flower heads about 5 mm (0.2 in) long, greenish-yellow, flowering in late summer. Fruits small brown pubescent achenes with pappus of scabrous bristles.
Distribution: Wyoming west to the Pacific Coast, south to western Texas.
Habitat: Rocky breaks and hillsides.

Comment: Brickellia honors the American botanist John Brickell; californica refers to its discovery in California.
