Description: Shrub to 2 m (6 ft) tall, erect or straggling. Leaves opposite, oblong, lanceolate, ot broadly ovate, 3-9 cm (1.2-3.6 in) long and 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 in) wide, base rounded or wedge-shaped, acute at apex, serrate. Flowers axillary, few, small greenish-purple. Fruits rough warty capsules about 10 mm (0.4 in) in diameter, crimson when ripe and somewhat resembling strawberries, splitting open at maturity.
Distribution: Native to eastern United States westward to Missouri and Oklahoma.
Habitat: well-drained bottomland forests, sometimes in mesic upland forests.

Comment: Euonymus means "true name"; americana refers to North America.
