Description: Small tree. The species is similar to J. virginiana except the leaves are minutely denticulate (visible with a lens) and the trunk is usually branched into several stems near the base.
Distribution: The species is native to the Edwards Plateau, the Arbuckles, and the Ozarks.
Habitat: Oak-cedar savannas and prairie margins, usually on thin soil derived from limestone.
NWI status: none
Comment: Juniperus is the ancient classical name for the old-world junipers; ashei honors the American botanist W. W. Ashe.
