Vitis rupestris Scheele

    Bushy, short-jointed woody vine often covering shrubs or rocks, seldom climbing trees. Tendrils usually reddish, few. Leaves reniform to reniform-ovate, usually more or less folded lengthwise, to 10 cm (4 in) long and 15 cm (6 in) wide, base with wide sinus to truncate, coarsely few-toothed or shallowly lobed, shiny-glabrous on both surfaces. Inflorescence a dense compound panicle 2-4.5 cm (0.8-1.8 in) long, flowering in late Spring. Fruits black, glaucous, 6-12 mm (0.2-0.5 in) in diameter, ripening mid- to late Summer.

    Distribution: Native to an area from Illinois to Tennessee, west to Oklahoma and Texas.
    Habitat: Streamsides and ravines.
    NWI status: FACU
    Comment: Vitis is the old Latin name for grape; rupestris refers to the often stony habitat.
