Notes: A perennial
species introduced from Brazil,
Argentina, and/or Uruguay. First
reported in the wild from Long Island in 1893. A
popular “oxygen” plant in the aquarium trade. Aquarium
enthusiasts are encourage to use
American waterweed instead. Brazilian
waterweed is considered or pest or noxious weed in several states. It grows in dense mats which adversely affect
lake ecology and economy.
American
waterweed or anacharis (Elodea
canadensis Michx.)
Native
perennial.
Notes: The leaves of American
waterweed are smaller than Brazilian waterweed. The
middle and upper leaves on the stem are in whorls of 4 to 6,
whereas those of Brazilian waterweed are paired (opposite) or in whorls
of three.
American
waterweed provides habitat for aquatic insects and other
invertebrates.
