Note:
The seeds and
foliage of coontails are eaten by
birds. They also provide habitat and
shelter for juvenile fish and aquatic insects. Both
species are native perennials.

considered OBL.
Identification: these
two species can be separated based on two characters.
Coontail has jagged (serrate) leaves and spines on
the seeds
(achenes). Spineless coontail has
neither characteristic.
