Wetland and Aquatic Plants of Oklahoma

Interactive Keys: Submersed

Hornworts (Ceratophyllaceae)

Note: The seeds and foliage of coontails are eaten by birds.  They also provide habitat and shelter for juvenile fish and aquatic insects.  Both species are native perennials.

NWI status: coontails are considered OBL.

Identification: these two species can be separated based on two characters.  Coontail has jagged (serrate) leaves and spines on the seeds (achenes).  Spineless coontail has neither characteristic.
