Note: The distinctive, wavy leaves allow for easy identification of this plant.  Curly pondweed was introduced to North America from Eurasia in the mid-19th century.  It can form dense mats that are an obstruction to lake recreation.  In several state, it is classified as a noxious, invasive aquatic plant.  Grows most vigorously in early summer.  Produces overwintering structures (turions) in late summer and early fall.  Presently, it is known from scattered locations in Oklahoma.

Illinois pondweed (Potamogeton illinoensis Morong)
Native perennial.

Note: Illinois pondweed can grow in dense masses.  In states where this plant is more common, it can impede boat traffic and reduce stream flow.  It has been collected from only four locations in Oklahoma.
