Pondweeds (Potamogetonaceae)  

Notes: The seeds, or achenes, are an important food for waterfowl.  The stems and foliage of some species are also eaten by insects, waterfowl and shorebirds, and mammals.  Pondweeds provide excellent habitat for aquatic invertebrates and juvenile fishes.

NWI status: All pondweeds are classified as OBL

Largeleaf pondweed (Potamogeton amplifolius Tuckerman)

Notes: Submersed leaves are oval to lance shaped and are attached to the stem (sessile) or on short petioles.


Waterthread pondweed (Potamogeton diversifolius Raf.) 
Native perennial.

Notes: One of the most common species of pondweed in eastern Oklahoma.  The leaves have longer petioles and are smaller than the other species listed.  Submersed leaves are long and narrow.

Longleaf pondweed (Potamogeton nodosus Poir.)
Native perennial.

Notes: The most common species of pondweed in Oklahoma.  Base of the leaf is rounded or tapering (cuneate).

Spotted pondweed (Potamogeton pulcher Tuckerman) 
Native perennial.
