Native perennial.

Note: Although widegongrass is a freshwater species, it is quite tolerant of salinity.   In fact, all reported occurrences are from western Oklahoma in areas with relatively high salinity.   Widgeongrass provides food and cover for aquatic invertebrates and fishes.  Waterfowl and shorebirds eat all parts of the plant.  Widgeongrass can grow in sufficient density as to present a recreational nuisance, although such an instance has not been reported in Oklahoma.
