Note: Although widegongrass is a freshwater
species, it is
quite tolerant of salinity. In fact,
all reported occurrences are from western Oklahoma in areas with
relatively
high salinity. Widgeongrass provides
food and cover for aquatic invertebrates and fishes.
Waterfowl and shorebirds eat all parts of the plant. Widgeongrass can grow in sufficient density
as to present a recreational nuisance, although such an instance has
not been
reported in Oklahoma.
NWI status:
OBL.
