Hazel alder (Alnus serrulata (Ait.) Willd.)  
Native perennial.

Notes: A shrub that grows along stream and lake margins.  The cherokee had many uses for this plant, including toothache remedy, cough suppressant, and to lower blood pressure.  It is also used as a dye plant and for tanning.

Seaside alder (Alnus maritima (Marsh.) Muhl. ex Nutt. )
Native perennial.

Note: The seaside alder has an intriguing distribution; Blue River drainage of Oklahoma, northern Georgia, and the Delmerva Peninsula.  Although much speculations exists, a satisfactory explanation has yet to be found.  The Delaware used stems in basketry.
