Notes: A shrub common to shorelines and stream margins.  Leaves are browsed by deer.  The Kiowa made mats and bedding from the stems.  Dye made from the flowers were used as a substitute for indigo.

Note: Unlike false indigo, this species has conspicuously raised veins on the underside of the leaves and dense hairs on the calyx of the flowers.  The leaves are browsed by deer.
