Notes: Seeds are eaten by some species birds and
small mammals. Cherokee used red maple for
construction and
wood carving. The wood is used to some
extent in furniture production, but is of limited commercial value.

elder (Acer negundo
L.)
Native perennial.
Notes: Seeds are often eaten by some species birds
and small
mammals. Large knots were carved into
bowls by the Cheyenne. The wood of
boxelder has been used in the production of furniture, cooperage, and
boxes. Of limited commercial importance. This is our only maple with compound leaves. The leaves bear a vague resemblance to
poison ivy, for which it is often mistaken.
