Notes: Seeds are often eaten by some species birds and small mammals.  Large knots were carved into bowls by the Cheyenne.  The wood of boxelder has been used in the production of furniture, cooperage, and boxes.  Of limited commercial importance.  This is our only maple with compound leaves.  The leaves bear a vague resemblance to poison ivy, for which it is often mistaken.
